Crowdfunding is about sourcing a crowd and asking for money.
Pretty basic stuff.
Individuals, organizations, and businesses fundraise all the time for many varied reasons; sometimes out of desperate need, sometimes just to move forward. Most often just because cash is hard to come by.
It’s about building community. Everybody needs to be accepted. It doesn’t matter that you are an individual, or an organization, or a business; being accepted by the tribe, whatever tribe that is... is one of the most fundamental needs we all share.
It’s also about awareness; crowdfunding, after all, is a promotional tool born of the internet. Offering an opportunity to help out with a project, in a light-hearted manner or with all seriousness, and doing so through the web is what it’s all about. It gets the word out; the more viral, the better; and restaurants live and breath by word-of-mouth.
The restaurant business is tough at the best of times. It doesn’t matter if you have 120 seats or 60. It doesn’t matter if your menu lists a $5 lunch and $10 specials or if it offers $30 main plates in a casual fine-dining atmosphere. Its especially tough in the cold winter months where staying top-of-mind and filling those seats with new customers and loyal regulars is what keeps the doors open, the bills paid, and your staff employed.
Asking for donations, making a big deal of it, and offering tasteful, value-added rewards in return is pretty straightforward. It certainly isn’t begging; it’s just good business sense.
